Bishop Michael Shares Message Following Election of Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV

9 May 2025

Tena koutou katoa,

Please join with me in praying with gratitude for our new Holy Father , Pope Leo XIV, the 267th successor of Saint Peter and the first American to ascend to the papacy.

Born Robert Francis Prevost on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, he is a member of the Order of Saint Augustine, marking the first time an Augustinian has been elected pope. His journey of faith and service has taken him from the streets of Chicago to the mission fields of Peru, where he spent decades ministering and fostering communities of faith. He served as Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023 and was appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops in 2023, overseeing the selection of bishops worldwide.

Pope Leo XIV

In choosing the name “Leo,” he aligns his mission with the Lion of Judah, Jesus, he comes to bring peace and joy. This name reflects his commitment to lead with courage, justice, and humility, drawing inspiration from the boldness of Pope Leo the Great.

In his first address from St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV humbly requested prayers from the faithful, acknowledging the immense responsibility of his new role and expressing his reliance on God’s grace to guide him.

As he embarks on this sacred journey, let us unite in prayer, asking the Lord to grant Pope Leo XIV wisdom, strength, and compassion to shepherd the Church in these times.
